Latest News (November 2025):

At Poultry Paddock, our turkeys are normally raised free range in beautiful woodland, where they spend their days roaming under the canopy, foraging naturally, and living exactly as a turkey should. This slow, active lifestyle creates birds that are healthy, content, and full of exceptional flavour.

However, due to the current avian influenza housing restrictions across the UK, all poultry keepers are legally required to house their birds to protect them from wild-bird transmission.
Free-range woodland rearing simply isn’t permitted while these restrictions are in place.

Rather than switching to an intensive system, we’ve chosen a method that fully complies with the rules while preserving the welfare and natural behaviour our birds are known for.

Our Pasture-Raised System (Compliant with Bird Flu Housing Rules)

To maintain our high standards even during the housing order, we’re using a mobile polytunnel pasture system.

Our turkeys live in a spacious mobile polytunnel that is towed to fresh pasture so that they get fresh pasture each day. This system gives them all the benefits of clean ground, natural forage, and stimulating surroundings, while still meeting the legal requirement for covered housing during the AI restrictions.

What This Means for Our Turkeys

  • Fresh ground daily – new grass, seeds, plants, and insects to explore

  • Natural daylight and excellent airflow

  • Plenty of space to move (3 times the space usually provided in conventional systems)

  • Low stress and high welfare throughout the restrictions

  • A clean, healthy environment thanks to reduced soil build-up and daily rotation

It’s the closest possible alternative to our woodland free-range system and ensures our birds stay active, healthy, and well-nourished.

Why Pasture Movement Matters

By moving the shelter onto fresh pasture each day, the birds enjoy:

  • Superior Flavour & Quality

Their varied natural diet and constant gentle exercise contribute to deeper flavour, better texture, and excellent fat covering.

  • Clean, Low-Disease Environment

Fresh ground means drier conditions, cleaner feet, fewer parasites, and better overall bird health.

  • Environmental Benefits

Manure is evenly spread across the field, naturally fertilising the soil and improving pasture health without overgrazing.

Returning to Woodland Free-Range

As soon as DEFRA lifts the avian influenza housing restrictions, all our poultry will return to the free-range lifestyle we are known for and passionate about.
This remains our preferred, long-standing, and much-loved rearing system. It is our intention to rear turkeys as “Woodland Free Range” in future years.

Latest News (August 2025):

Once again we’re rearing the turkeys in Staffordshire woodland that’s adjacent to our organic holding. They’re the same great tasting black & bronze feathered birds that have gone down so well for the last 6 years.

  • Traditional dark feathering – Black & bronze feathered birds
  • Slow growing birds for the best taste and texture
  • Small flock size
  • Free Range in a woodland environment (moved to pasture reared system due to AI restrictions)
  • Medication free feed
  • Humanely slaughtered & processed on the farm
  • Matured for at least 7 days
  • Local sales only – North Staffordshire
  • Direct from the producer, significantly cheaper than equivalent birds from the well publicised big brands
  • Low food miles
